2013 MINI Cooper Countryman Wagon Exterior

What’s New for 2013

The 2013 Mini Cooper Countryman gains a new trim level, the John Cooper Works. Like other JCW models, it will come with increased power, better handling and unique interior and exterior styling details.

Most Mini Cooper models eventually get the high-performance treatment, and the 2013 Mini Cooper Countryman continues this tradition in the form of the new John Cooper Works trim level. This new Countryman is the first John Cooper Works (JCW) edition to feature an available six-speed automatic transmission, although a six-speed manual will still be standard issue. All-wheel drive, optional for the regular Cooper S Countryman, will be standard for the JCW.

The Countryman JCW is powered by a revised version of the turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder used across much of the Mini lineup. Featuring direct injection and variable valve lift borrowed from its BMW corporate parent, optimized intake and exhaust systems and a larger intercooler, the improved engine makes 211 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. An overboost function can briefly push midrange torque up to 221 lb-ft.

Mini says a manual-equipped Countryman JCW will cover zero to 60 mph in about 7.1 seconds, or about 7.5 seconds when equipped with the automatic. Even with the added power and standard all-wheel drive, fuel economy should still remain pretty high.

An enhanced sport suspension complements the Countryman JCW’s all-wheel-drive ability, with stiffer spring and damper rates and stronger antiroll bars. The Countryman JCW also sits nearly a half-inch lower than the base Countryman, improving its handling characteristics.

The Countryman Cooper John Cooper Works also gets a suitably racy interior, featuring black cloth seats with red stitching, a darkened speedometer and tachometer, and an anthracite headliner.

Mini hasn’t announced pricing for the Countryman John Cooper Works, which arrives late this fall, but we expect a starting price of around $32,000. Check back for a full review of the 2013 Mini Cooper Countryman, including specs, driving impressions and buying advice, as it becomes available.
