May Subcompact Sales: Chevrolet Sonic in First, One New Aveo Sold
The Chevrolet Sonic has once again trounced the traditional subcompact class leader, the Nissan Versa, in sales for the month of May — and that’s not including the one new Aveo GM lists as being sold last month. The Versa still has a sizable lead through the first five months of the year, though the Sonic could continue to make up ground through the end of 2013.
The Ford Fiesta finished third, with 6693 units sold in May. That’s far off the pace of the second-place Nissan Versa (8614 units), but still comfortably ahead of the Hyundai Accent, with 5578 vehicles sold last month. The mechanically related Kia Rio followed in fifth place, while the Honda Fit remains above the Fiat 500 in sixth. The Fiat 500 recently celebrated 100,000 sales in North America.

At the lower-volume end of the subcompact segment, the Smart Fortwo squeaked ahead of the Mazda2 by fewer than 30 units, while the Scion iQ settled at the bottom again, with 526 units sold.
